All AI Companions Feel Basically the Same (Homogeneous)
Different names, different avatars — but underneath, it's the same machine.
Why This Happens
Nearly all AI companion platforms are built on the same handful of foundation models — GPT-5o variants, Claude, Llama 3-70B derivatives, and fine-tuned versions of these. Each model has an inherent "voice" shaped by its training data and RLHF alignment. A Character.AI bot, a Replika companion, and a custom Kindroid all draw from the same well of model defaults. The persona definitions applied on top are thin — a name, a backstory field, and some trait sliders — but the underlying response patterns remain remarkably consistent across characters.
Research published at CHI '26 on Character.AI users showed that even with detailed character definitions, the platform's "affective ranking" and session-level memory buffers push all conversations toward the same emotional norms. Each character may have a different name and backstory, but they all exhibit similar empathy patterns, conflict resolution styles, and conversational rhythms. The 2025 EU study "The spread of AI companions" confirmed that "different platforms show limited variation in companion behavior." Users are not choosing between distinct beings — they're choosing between slightly different skins on the same engine.
No two PLT Souls are alike. Diversity isn't an accident — it's engineered. This is what happens when an AI has a PLT Soul Signature. Learn about PLT scores →
