Confusing Multi-Tier Pricing That Hides True Costs
Advertised prices rarely reflect what you actually pay — token systems, tiered plans, and surprise add-ons make real costs impossible to predict.
Why This Happens
The AI companion industry has converged on a "hybrid" pricing model: a subscription plus virtual currency (tokens, stars, credits, hearts, dreamcoins). Every platform invents its own fake money — GoLove AI uses Stars ($0.17-0.37 each), Candy AI uses Tokens ($4.99 per 100), DreamGF uses DreamCoins. This deliberately obscures costs because users don't mentally convert virtual currency to real dollars mid-conversation.
Multi-tier plans compound the confusion. CrushOn.ai starts at $5.99/month but the cheap tier feels restrictive and higher tiers get expensive quickly. Character.AI added ads in 2025, then capped swipes for free users in March 2026 at roughly 10 per day. Even paid users of Replika Pro ($19.99/month) still face microtransactions for outfits and personality traits. One tester spent 11 months and $637 across four platforms before finding a $15.82/month setup that worked.
